Knife-wielding man wounds 17 inside Tokyo train

A young man carried out a knife attack inside a Tokyo train on Sunday night and then started a fire in it. Seventeen people were injured, including a man in his 70s who was stabbed and is reportedly unconscious. The attacker was arrested.

日曜夜、一人の若い男が東京の電車の中でナイフで襲撃し、車内に火をつけた。刺されて意識不明の70代男性を含め、17人が怪我をした。犯人は逮捕された。

Police say that while riding on a train bound for Shinjuku Station, the attacker started assaulting passengers near Kokuryo Station in the western Tokyo city of Chofu.

警察によると、新宿行きの電車に乗っているとき、西東京の調布市にある国領駅近くで、犯人は突然乗客を襲い始めたという。

They say he also used cigarette lighter fluid to set a fire inside the train. Large flames rose briefly, burning some seats.

また犯人は、車内に火をつけるためタバコのライターオイルを使用したという。

The train made an emergency stop at Kokuryo Station, allowing passengers to evacuate to the platform.

電車は国領駅で緊急停止し、乗客をホームに避難させた。

Police arrested Hattori Kyota on suspicion of attempted murder. They say the 24-year-old dropped his knife when they told him to do so.

警察は服部恭太を殺人未遂容疑で逮捕した。警察官に言われナイフをおろしたという。

Investigators quote the man as saying he thought he would be able to fulfill his wish of receiving capital punishment if he killed at least two people.
