People ran for cover in New York’s Times Square on Tuesday night after mistaking a motorcycle backfiring for gunshots.

Video taken at the site shows a large number of people running away, screaming, or ducking down.

The New York Police Department says that before 10 p.m. it received multiple calls from people who said they had heard what sounded like gunshots at the tourist spot.

The department later announced that what caused the panic was the loud noise of a motorcycle backfiring and called for calm, writing on Twitter that “Times Square is very safe.”

The incident came after two mass shootings hit the United States in less than 24 hours this month.
