気候変動 200頭以上のトナカイの死骸

Researchers in Norway say more than 2 hundred reindeer who apparently died of starvation were found on a group of Arctic islands. They say climate change may be to blame.
ノルウェーの研究者たちは、飢餓で亡くなったと考えられる200頭以上のトナカイが北極圏の島々で発見されたという。気候変動のせいかもしれないと述べた。
The Norwegian Polar Institute says the reindeer carcasses were found in the Svalbard archipelago during its annual survey that began 40 years ago.
ノルウェー北極研究所によると、トナカイの死骸はスバルバル諸島で40年前に始まった年次調査中に発見された。
It says a comparable death toll was only recorded once before in the winter of 2007.

The researchers say they believe climate change has increased the amount of rain in the Arctic. The rain forms a layer of ice on the ground, making it difficult for the reindeer to graze. The researchers warn that the effects of climate change could become more serious if action is not taken.

The United Nations also warns that the number of reindeer is falling in the Arctic. It says this could have a serious impact on the lives of the Sami people and other nomadic reindeer herders.
