Japan says its economy is in ‘severe situation’

日本　景気「厳しい状況」

The Japanese government has downgraded its economic assessment for March due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The latest monthly report says the nation’s economy is now in a “severe situation”. The word “recovery” has been cut from the assessment for the first time in almost seven years.

日本政府は、をコロナウィルスの感染拡大により3月の経済予測を下方修正した。直近の月例報告では景気は今「厳しい状況にある」と述べた。「回復」という言葉は、総括判断からおよそ7年ぶりに削除された。

The Cabinet Office report says private consumption is showing weakness. It is the first time that assessment has been lowered in more than three years. It says sales at convenience stores turned negative from the middle of last month.

内閣府は個人消費が弱い動きとなっていると述べた。総括評価はおよそ3年余りぶりに下方修正された。コンビニでのの販売額も先月後半以降マイナスに転じたという。

The report says exports are weak and imports are decreasing, as parts supplies from China have stalled .
It says employment has been improving, but is also affected by the pandemic.

報告によると、中国からの部品の供給が滞っているため、輸出は弱まり、輸入は減少していると言う。

The report says attention needs to be paid to further downside risks to the economy both in Japan and abroad from the influence of the coronavirus.

コロナウィルスによる影響から、日本と外国の両方の経済がさらに下降するリスクに注意を払う必要がある。
