Abe plans blanket 100,000-yen cash handout

Japan’s Prime Minister Abe Shinzo says he plans to provide a blanket cash handout of 100,000 yen, or about 930 dollars, per person as part of economic measures to deal with the coronavirus outbreak.
日本の安倍首相は、コロナウィルス感染拡大に対処する経済対策の一部として一人当たり一律10万円、およそ930ドルを現金を給付する予定であると述べた。
Abe conveyed his plan to the head of junior coalition partner Komeito, Yamaguchi Natsuo, over the phone on Thursday. Abe said he intends to alter the government’s supplementary budget proposal for fiscal 2020 to secure the necessary funding.
首相は木曜日電話で、連立与党の公明党の山口那津代表にその計画について伝えた。首相は、必要な資金を確保するため2020年度政府の補正予算案を組み替える意向を述べた。
In phone talks earlier in the day, Yamaguchi asked Abe to offer a blanket cash handout of 100,000 yen regardless of income level. Yamaguchi said this should replace the government’s plan to hand out 300,000 yen to households that have lost income due to the outbreak.
その日早くの電話で、山口代表は安倍に、収入に関わらず一律10万円の現金給付をするよう求めた。山口は、感染拡大で収入を失った世帯へ30万円を給付するという政府の計画を取りやめるべきと述べた。
Abe told him he would consider the proposal. Abe later met senior officials of the main governing Liberal Democratic Party and told them he plans to alter the supplementary budget bill for the 100,000-yen handout.
安倍は提案について検討すると伝えた。安倍はこの後、自民党の幹事長らと会談し、10万円給付の補正予算案の組み替えを行う計画を伝えた。
The prime minister asked them to proceed with the necessary preparations within the party.
首相は、与党内で必要な準備を進めるよう彼らに求めた。
Abe’s Cabinet had been expected to submit the supplementary budget bill to the Diet next Monday, but the move may now be delayed.
安倍内閣は来週月曜日、国会へ補正予算案の提出をする予定だったが、その動きは遅れる可能性がある。
