Japanese railways, airlines and expressways were crowded with people heading for their hometowns or vacation spots, as departures for the “bon” summer holidays reached its peak on Saturday.

Japan Railway group companies say shinkansen bullet trains heading out of major cities are almost fully booked for the day.

More than 60,000 people, a record number for the summer holiday season, are expected to depart from Narita Airport near Tokyo on Saturday.

Narita Airport officials say they expect the departure of more than 547,000 people during the 10 days until August 18. That’s up 6.2 percent from the same period last year.

The officials cited the operations of new Southeast Asian low cost carriers as the reason for the surge in travelers.
