Britain’s ruling Conservative Party has elected former foreign secretary Boris Johnson as its new leader. He will become the next prime minister of the country.
英国の与党・保守党は、前外相のボリス・ジョンソンを新党首に選出しました。彼はイギリスの次期首相になります。
He will succeed Prime Minister Theresa May, who quit as party leader after failing to deliver her deal to take Britain out of the European Union.
イギリスをＥＵ（ヨーロッパ連合）からの離脱に失敗した後、党首を辞任したテレサ・メイ首相を引き継ぎます。
The Conservative Party on Tuesday announced that Johnson had defeated Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt in the leadership race. Johnson is to succeed May as prime minister on Wednesday.
火曜日、保守党は、ジョンソンが党首選挙でジェレミー・ハント外相を破ったと発表しました。水曜日、ジョンソンはメイ首相に代わって首相に就任する予定です。
Johnson says the country must meet the deadline for Brexit on October 31 and he does not rule out leaving without an agreement with the EU.
ジョンソン氏は、10月31日のBrexitの期限を必ず守る、EUとの合意なしの離脱もありえると述べています。
May congratulated Johnson, saying he will have her “full support from the back benches.”
メイ首相は「平議員として全面で支える」と、ジョンソン氏を祝福しました。
She also tweeted that they need to work together to deliver a Brexit that works for the whole UK and to keep opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn out of government.

But Corbyn says Johnson hasn’t won the support of the country.

Corbyn tweeted that Johnson “has won the support of fewer than 100,000 unrepresentative Conservative Party members by promising tax cuts for the richest, and pushing for a damaging No Deal Brexit.”
コルビン氏は、ジョンソン氏は「富裕層への減税を約束し、痛みを伴う合意なき離脱を主張することで、10万人に満たない保守党の支持を得たにすぎない」とツイートしました。
Corbyn said a no-deal Brexit would mean job cuts and higher prices in the shops. He added that the people of Britain should decide who becomes the Prime Minister in a general election.
コルビンによれば、合意のない離脱は雇用の減少と物価の上昇を意味すると述べました。国民が総選挙で首相になる人を決めるべきだと付け加えました。
US President Donald Trump posted a congratulatory message: “Congratulations to Boris Johnson on becoming the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He will be great!”
米大統領ドナルド・トランプ氏は「イギリスの新首相になるボリス・ジョンソン、おめでとう。素晴らしい首相になるだろう！」と祝辞を述べました。
Trump told reporters that he likes Johnson, and the former British foreign secretary is “a different kind of a guy.” The president added, “They say I’m a different kind of a guy, too.”
トランプ氏はジョンソン氏を気に入っており、英国前外相は「型破り」だと記者団に語り、「私も型破りであるとと言われてきている」と付け加えました。
